What Are Spay and Neuter Surgery?

Spay surgery and neuter surgery are two procedures designed to sterilize female and male pets. Spay surgery removes a female pet’s ovaries and uterus, and neuter surgery removes a male pet’s testicles.

Why Have Your Pet Sterilized? The Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Pets

While electing a surgical procedure for a pet is a serious decision, we strongly encourage our clients to choose spay or neuter surgery for their dogs and cats. Both procedures are considered routine because they are performed so frequently, and any risks associated with the surgeries far outweigh the many benefits.

Health Benefits

Removing a pet’s reproductive organs eliminates the risk of cancers associated with these organs and significantly reduces cancers related to the reproductive system. Additionally, sterilized pets come into contact with fewer animals throughout their lives, reducing their risk of contracting contagious diseases.

Behavior Benefits

Intact pets tend to wander, vocalize, mark territory, and act out more aggressively than their sterilized counterparts.

Community Benefits

Spaying and neutering pets help to prevent the overcrowding of animal shelters in our communities.

When to Have Your Pet Spayed or Neutered

Puppies are traditionally sterilized between six and nine months. However, healthy puppies can be sterilized as early as eight weeks. Cats can be spayed or neutered once they reach eight weeks.
Although healthy adult dogs and cats can undergo these procedures, it’s best to have them spayed or neutered before reproductive maturity to prevent health risks and behavior issues.

Spay or Neuter Surgery at Sage Creek Animal Hospital

While these procedures are considered routine, they are still surgeries. Our veterinarians perform these procedures with the utmost care.
